Why We Recommend Using Skin Pro Oil Before Face to Base

When it comes to layering skincare, there’s a lot of debate around what goes first—oil or moisturiser? Some brands have different guidelines, but at The Know, we’ve done our homework. We consulted with dermatologists and scientists to determine the best way to apply our Skin Pro oil and Face to Base moisturiser—and it turns out, it depends!

The Science of Layering: Why It Depends

Where your products sit in your routine depends entirely on their molecular structure, ingredient composition, and your skin’s unique needs. Not all oils are created equal. They have vastly different chemical structures and absorption rates.

One thing we can all agree on? The heaviest product should always go last.

Why Skin Pro First, Face to Base Second

Our Skin Pro is formulated with light, fast-absorbing oils like grape seed, jojoba, and camellia (tea) oil—oils that closely mimic your skin’s natural sebum. These ingredients sink in quickly, nourishing and prepping your skin for whatever comes next.

Face to Base, on the other hand, is a richer formulation with sunflower seed oil, ceramides, and humectants that help seal in hydration.  Sunflower oil has a heavier molecular weight than grape seed oil, making it more occlusive. If Face to Base were applied first, its occlusive nature could slow the absorption of the Skin Pro oil. By applying oil first and then moisturiser, you ensure that your skin gets the full benefit of both products.

When to Use an Oil Last

While we recommend applying Skin Pro first, there are cases where oil might work better as the final step. Consider applying oil last if:

• Your moisturiser is extremely lightweight, such as a gel, water-cream, or oil-free lotion.

• You have very dry skin and want to lock everything in with an added occlusive layer.
